The Hand Clinic
Mr Alastair Graham is an orthopaedic hand surgeon and has been a Consultant in Buckinghamshire for the last 15 years with busy NHS practices at Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville. His private practice is entirely devoted to the hand, wrist and forearm.
He studied at Magdalen College, Oxford. After junior posts in central London he returned to Oxford as a registrar: his first year was spent at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals. He also worked in Reading. He did his hand and microvascular fellowship in Melbourne and returned to Oxford for a further hand fellowship.
Mr Graham enjoys skeletal reconstruction of the hand and wrist and particularly fixation of complex distal radius and scaphoid fractures. He manages a large population of rheumatoid patients. He is passionate about minimalist needle fasciotomy for Dupuytrens contracture in clinic which is suitable for up to 70% of patients.
Additional subspecialty interests include treatment of hand disorders in musicians for which a good working knowledge of musical instruments and environment is needed (he is married to a professional violinist and is busy as a singer, pianist and flautist). He is also interested in adult neuromuscular control disorders of the hand, particularly cerebral palsy, stroke and the Parkinsonian hand. He plays enough tennis and golf to give confident sports injury opinions
As with all hand specialists Mr Graham’s most common operative procedure is carpal tunnel release.
Mr Graham’s practice at The Bridge Clinic is supported by our visiting Hand Therapist, Meryl Glover. Meryl qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1988 and has specialised in hand therapy since 1991. She has a broad range of experience, with specific expertise in the areas of Plastics, Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, burns and the key skill of splinting.
Meryl provides an extensive range of hand therapy and other therapeutic services including bespoke splints for those with hand, wrist elbow and upper limb problems. Treatment consists of individually tailored management of the patient’s condition, designed to restore function and minimalist pain. If the hand problems are part of a condition such as Parkinson's, then the other aspects of the condition can be included in treatment.
Meryl has held a number of positions throughout the UK as well as being involved in voluntary work in rural India since 2001. She has fundraised extensively for this programme and subsequently established a limb fitting centre for the Anandwan community. Prior to founding her own practise, Meryl was a key member of the team at The Windsor Hand Clinic. She is an active member of the British Association of Hand Therapists (BAHT).
Self-Pay Carpal Tunnel Release
Many patients suffering with carpal tunnel are self-employed and find that their symptoms are affecting their ability to work. In order to return to work as quickly as possible, a lot of patients opt to self-pay.
Mr Graham’s self-funding package for this procedure at The Bridge Clinic is £1295. This includes Mr Graham’s fee for doing the operation as well as a follow up consultation and the associated clinic charges for the minor op.
